Chapter 8
Mia
Iâm still shaking when Adam steers his truck down the streets of where I live. His truck screeching to a halt outside, before he puts it into neutral, leaving the engine humming at the curbside.
âGet yourself an overnight bag.â His voice is still full of anger, but his gaze is soft when I look at him.
âAn overnight bag?â My eyes widen in surprise.
Where are we going?
Like he can hear my thoughts, he announces, âWeâre going to the beach house.â A hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
âBeach house?â I repeat.
Adamâs expression changes as he swallows, a hint of vulnerability suddenly there. âMy mother left it to me when she died.â His voice is quiet and reminds me of the depth of his own loss.
Thatâs why he understands mine, too.
âYours? Not Harrisonâs or Christianâs?â
A small, wistful smile curves his lips. âNo, they got her New York penthouse to share,â he reveals. âItâs worth a lot more, but it doesnât hold the same appeal as the beach house.â
His smile warms my heart, casting aside any lingering doubts I had before. A contented sigh escapes my lips as I say, âIâll be quick.â
Inside the house I share, I rush around, throwing clothes and toiletries in my bag, not wanting to be caught by my housemates.
I mean. How do I explain Iâm going away for the night with my stepbrother?
I sneak back outside. Adam grabs my bag and throws it into the trunk, and we both rush to get into the vehicle.
After an hour of driving, he pulls in front of a beautiful, white-washed house where the ocean beckons behind it.
I bite my lip as I step out of the truck and stare at the beach home. âItâs beautiful.â
Adam smiles. âIt was Momâs favorite place.â
âAnd yours?â
âIt was.â
My smile drops as I turn to him, confused.
âNow itâs anywhere with you.â
I smile. My heart is racing with excitement, but my nerves are fraying at the edges. I know we are changing the rules.
Adam sees my hesitation and takes me in his arms and whispers, âAre you ready?â
I nod and he lowers my feet onto the floor again before he holds out his hand. I take a deep breath and slip my hand into his, intertwining our fingers as I make the jump into the unknown.
When we reach the beach house, Adam unlocks the door. I turn around and inhale as I take in the breathtaking view, the scent of the ocean and the sound of crashing waves. Still, anticipation swirls inside me.
The door opens and we look at each other as we step inside, both of us knowing we are about to take this relationship much further than before.
Both knowing itâs too late to stop now.
